Ceresit CT49 Silix XD Nano Silicone Paint 15L | All Colours

Description

Ceresit CT49 Silix XD nano silicone paint, 15 litre

CT49 is Ceresit’s top-of-range silicone façade paint. It is a ready-mixed, water-based coating built on modified silicone and polysiloxane resins with special fillers, and it is the one we sell when a wall has to stay breathable but shed water and dirt. The cured film is very hydrophobic, so rain beads and runs off carrying loose dirt with it, while vapour still passes through freely. Classified V1 for vapour permeability (Sd less than 0.14 m) and W3 for water absorption (w not more than 0.1 kg/m²h0.5) to EN 1062-1, which is the combination you want over mineral wool EWI, lime plasters and older solid walls.

It is also crack-bridging and elastic, which is why it is specified so often on renovation work over tired mineral render rather than on new-build where nothing has moved yet. Supplied in 15 litre tubs, white or tinted to the Ceresit Colours of Nature palette.

What we stock

CT49 is made in one pack size only. The variation is in the colour, not the container.

Variant Pack size Approx. weight (at 1.5 kg/dm³) Coverage, two coats Approx. area per tub
CT49 white (base) 15 litre tub approx. 22.5 kg approx. 0.3 l/m² approx. 50 m²
CT49 tinted, Colours of Nature 15 litre tub approx. 22.5 kg approx. 0.3 l/m² approx. 50 m²

The 0.3 l/m² figure is the manufacturer’s average for two coats and it assumes a reasonably smooth, moderately absorbent substrate. On a 1.5 mm or 2 mm scraped texture, on open aerated block, or on anything thirsty and unprimed, expect to use more. The area per tub above is arithmetic from the 0.3 l/m² average, not a separate published figure.

Substrates and how long to wait before painting

Minimum ages before CT49 goes on. Painting a render before it has carbonated properly is the most common reason a job goes wrong, so these are worth holding to.

Substrate Minimum age Notes
Concrete over 28 days Must be sound, dry and free of release agents
Traditional cement, lime-cement and lime plasters over 14 days
Thin-coat mineral and mineral-polymer renders (CT34, CT35, CT137) over 5 days Crack-bridging makes CT49 a good match here
Thin-coat silicate renders (CT72, CT73) over 5 days
Thin-coat acrylic and silicone renders (CT60, CT63, CT64, CT74, CT75) over 3 days Also CT174, CT175 silicate-silicone and CT79 elastomeric
Gypsum substrates, internal only moisture below 1 % Prime with Ceresit CT17 first
Plasterboard and gypsum-fibre board, internal only Prime with Ceresit CT17 first
Existing sound paint coatings Only if well bonded. Lime, distemper and adhesive-bound coatings must come off

Which one do I need

Most people searching for this are trying to answer one of four questions.

  • My render has gone patchy, green or dirty and I want it to stay clean. This is the job CT49 was built for. The self-cleaning surface and the Bio Protect additive are the reason to pay the difference over a standard silicone paint. It will not remove existing algae, though, so the wall has to be washed down first.
  • I am painting over mineral wool EWI or a solid stone or lime wall. Go with CT49. V1 permeability with Sd under 0.14 m is about as breathable as a coloured façade coating gets, and it will not trap moisture in the build-up.
  • My thin-coat mineral render has hairline cracking. CT49 is crack-bridging and elastic, so it will cope with fine crazing that would show straight back through a rigid paint. Structural cracks are a repair job first, with CT29 filler.
  • I just want the render a different colour and the wall is sound. You may not need CT49. A standard silicone or a good acrylic will colour the wall for less money. CT49 earns its cost where the wall is damp-prone, north-facing, shaded, near trees or traffic, or where you are protecting an insulation system you do not want to touch again for twenty years.

On colour: dark shades on a large elevation build up serious heat and thermal stress. Ceresit’s own guidance is to keep dark colours to small areas such as architectural details. If a customer wants a dark elevation, talk to us before ordering.

CT49 against the obvious alternatives

Honest version, because the wrong choice here costs more than the paint.

  • Against a standard silicone façade paint (for example Ceresit CT48). Both are breathable and water-repellent. CT49 adds the self-cleaning surface, the crack-bridging and the higher durability of the Silix XD formulation. On a sheltered, clean, south-facing wall with no movement, a standard silicone paint will look the same for years and costs less. On a shaded, damp, dirt-loaded or previously cracked elevation, CT49 is the one that still looks right in year five.
  • Against an acrylic façade paint (CT42, CT44 type). Acrylic is cheaper, tough and washes well, and on a dense concrete or acrylic-rendered wall that is not moisture-critical it is a sensible choice. It is markedly less vapour-open than a V1 silicone, so keep it off lime, solid walls with rising or penetrating damp, and mineral wool insulation systems.
  • Against a silicate (mineral) paint. Silicate is the traditional answer on lime and heritage mineral substrates and it is extremely breathable. It is also unforgiving: it needs a genuinely mineral, never-painted or silicate-painted substrate, it is fussier to apply, and it will not bridge a crack. CT49 gets close to silicate breathability while going over acrylic, silicone and existing sound paint as well. If a conservation officer has specified mineral paint, use mineral paint.
  • Against re-rendering. Paint is a coating, not a repair. If the render is hollow, blown or debonded, painting it hides the problem for a season. Hack off and re-render, then paint.

Colours and tinting

Colours available for tint: Ceresit — VIEW ALL COLOURS (please note your colour in the checkout)

Tinted material is made to order in batches. Two points that matter on site:

  • Order the whole elevation in one go and check that every tub carries the same batch number. If you have to mix batch numbers, box them: decant and stir several tubs together before you start rather than changing batch part way up a wall.
  • Order a sensible margin. Coming back for two more tubs three weeks later means a new batch, and on a large flat elevation a slight shade difference will show at the join.
  • Screen and printed colour references are approximate. For anything colour-critical, ask us for a sample before the full order goes in.

On site

  • Preparation. Substrate must be sound, dry, clean and free of grease, dust and bitumen. Wash off dirt, algae and any weak or lime-bound coating, ideally with a low-pressure washer and CT98 cleaning agent, then let it dry fully. Repair damage with CT29 filler. Gypsum and plasterboard, internally, get primed with CT17.
  • Mixing. Stir the tub thoroughly with a drill and paddle for about two minutes before use. Do not mix CT49 with other paints, pigments or binders. Use clean, stainless tools and containers only.
  • Thinning. Up to 5 % water maximum, stirred in carefully. That is the limit. Over-thinning is the usual cause of poor opacity and patchy sheen.
  • Application. Brush, roller or spray. Two coats is normally sufficient. Spray with a pressure unit, for example a 517 tip at 200 to 220 bar. Keep a wet edge and work an elevation through without stopping at a scaffold lift.
  • Timing. Leave 12 to 24 hours between coats. Rain resistant after about 3 hours, but protect the façade with scaffold sheeting until it has dried fully.
  • Conditions. +5 °C to +25 °C, humidity below 80 %, and never in direct sun on a hot wall. Chasing the sun round a building is how you get lap marks and flashing.
  • What goes wrong. Painting fresh, highly alkaline mineral render before it has cured causes alkali attack on the film and the pigment, which shows as bleaching and patchiness. Hold to the substrate ages in the table above.
  • Protection. CT49 can stain glass, ceramics, timber, metal and stone permanently. Mask everything, cover plants, and rinse splashes off with water immediately. Wash tools with water straight after use.
  • Storage. 12 months unopened, kept cool, out of direct sun and protected from frost. Use opened tubs promptly.
  • PPE. Gloves and eye protection. Rinse eyes with water and seek medical advice on contact. Keep away from children.

Buying, delivery and collection

We hold CT49 in our own warehouse at Alexandra Works, Crawshawbooth, so white is normally available off the shelf and tinted colours are made to order. Next-day delivery UK-wide on stock items ordered before the cut-off, and free collection from our trade counter in Rossendale, which is open to the public as well as to the trade.

  • Bulk and full-pallet pricing on quantity orders — ring or email for a figure rather than paying list.
  • Ordering more than one product? We will price the full Ceresit system, adhesive, boards, mesh, basecoat, primer and topcoat, as one quote.
  • Send us the elevations or the drawings and we will do the take-off and tell you how many tubs the job actually needs.
  • Free technical advice, including U-value calculations and condensation risk analysis to BS EN ISO 6946 and BS EN ISO 13788, if you are specifying the wall build-up rather than just the finish.
